My Zard apricot on Citation, second spring in ground, was blooming in April when temps dropped to 22F. It lost all the bloom and is not leafing out. I see some die back on wood, but branches are still green under the bark. Should I do anything special to save a tree? Or just wait and see what happens?
That same freeze also hit me with the same results on a couple of mine. Yours should sprout new leaves. I’m south of you and mine are just starting to recover. I wouldn’t cut anything unless it scratches brown.
Thanks Robert, I will wait patiently!
Just for the reference, neighboring Harostar on K86, doing pretty well, has one fruit bearing, fingers crossed.
They both were covered with frost protection fabric, Harostar had 100W light turned on inside the cover, not sure if it helped.
I would watch for the formation of shoots from the rootstock, based on my (not-so-good) experience. Don’t cut it down yet, however.
How did it do last year? I’m not too far from you. I’ve been looking at adding zard. I’m curious how much later it bloomed compared to your other trees.
Zard blooms only few days later than Harostar, the only other apricot I have. Bloom time difference is negligible.
