I went to my local Home Depot today (west suburbs of Chicago), and all their 5-gallon fruit trees were $20, marked down from $40. Not a huge variety, and I know the quality and ID are always questionable from a Big Box, but 6+ feet tall and plenty more than an inch caliper. I might grab one as a headstart on a frankentree, and thought others might be interested to know that the price cuts have begun around here. They had a lot of trees left, so I might gamble and see if the price drops more, but it’s gonna hit 60F this weekend, so people might realize it’s Spring and they might start moving like hotcakes.
My question is about persimmon trees sold at Home Depot here in Annapolis, Md. I bought one Fuyu from Home Depot at the end of March (and one Fuyu from a local garden center that originated at Hollybrook Orchards on the Eastern Shore). The Home Depot persimmon originated in New Jersey. But the Home Depot tree, after 6 weeks, is still bare. It is still alive. The Hollybrook Orchards tree is full of leaves. Why the difference?
Home depot now sells fire blight. Went to HD and checked out their fresh tree shipment. ALL the pears had FB from tip to pot. I mean deep black FB. They want $70 for them too. No thanks, FB is free.
Did you bring it to the staff’s attention?
A likely response if you tell managment: What’s Fire Blight?
Something you do not want on your trees. It infects blooms and young leaves. Looks like you literally set it on fire. Often featuring a shepherd hook on the branch end.
If you let it stay on the tree it can kill your tree. Spraying before bloom set and trimming strikes out are your primary defenses.
