How do you tell if an apple is ripe?

This may be a stupid question . . .
How do I know when to pick an apple? I have a few Goldrush apples - among the Cedar Rust leaves !!! And I keep wondering how I’ll know when I should pull them?

The classic way is to see if the seeds have turned black (or at least dark brown). On my Liberty the apples like to fall off the tree when ripe, so I give them a little lift to see if they’re close. Even then they may or may not be right-ripe.

Gold Rush is a late ripening apple. Hard to imagine they are close to ripe unless you have a very unusual growing environment.
