my mixed flock survived unscathed -37f with no heat. a little frostbite on their combs but they were no worse for wear. even my bantams came thru fine. i supplement them with cracked corn in the winter. it helps keep them warm. even my leghorns, which are considered a warm weather chicken did fine. they all cram against each other to conserve heat on the roost.
careful not to break a bone Bob. ice causes alot of injuries when your not used to walking on it. penguins walk with short shuffling steps. walk like the penguin.
and use your toenails for grip?
yep. theyre called cleats!
I have been very careful walking on this, I walk like a crab on it. I was on a little bit of slope, and wasnāt paying attention, I guess. The dog food went flying but I scooped back up and put it in his bowl. Thankfully, I had like 3 layers of clothes on, so I had some padding.
I know that lady!! Always had a tan in early April. Her skin dried up and killed her 10 years later:
Has been snowing pretty heavily for an hour or so, and thick bands of snow all the way back to Memphis, and coming from that direction. At 23 degrees, I donāt see any freezing rain issue with this storm, so this could be our biggest snowfall of the year.
Monday it looks like a pretty good rain falls on top of that snowpack. Should knock it down.
Melt, melt, all melt down ā¦to the drain
What was once rain on the models now appears to be snow for areas of Iowa. Might need to shovel in that S Wi/IL/Iowa region.
Forecast shows us getting into the 40s for a few days next weekā¦time to get out into the orchard and finish the apple tree pruning!
Got in neighborhood of 4 inchesā¦but it might have been moreā¦as about 1/4 inch sleet and rain crusted the top of the snowā¦at some pointā¦I slept through most of it.
We only got abt 3in, which is way lower than I thought weād get. But at least it makes it easier to walk out there. The temp just peaked over 30, so if it goes up a bit more and the sun comes out, some of this might start melting off. We didnāt lose power this time, but some just a few miles north of us are.
21F. Warmest day since Feb 4.
Not much in the extendedā¦no real warmth but nothing cold. Sat morning should go below 0F and iām hoping that is it for the year.
Bite your tongue!
I spoke too soon. About 10 minutes after I posted this it went out, why I donāt know. It was close to 31, so maybe some melting ice caused some problems.
During that time, I tried to chisel the ice off the deck, mostly unsuccessful. I then thought Iād try to take the Mazda for a drive and see how it handled in the snow packed driveway, and then the roads. Got thru the snow okay, drove around for about 10 miles, the roads were mostly good, just some patchy snow on the sides.
Got back to the home driveway, and thought, here we go. I put it in low gear and crawled up the hill, it handled it pretty well. It was about 3:30, and starting to snow again pretty heavily.
Got back up to the house and the power had come back on. It stayed that way for about an hour, then out again at 4:45. We were just about to cook supper, but had to scrap that. So I went out to feed the pets, take the trash down to the road bin, etc.
It came back on at 7:15, so we just heated some leftovers, and watched Jeopardy. Until right before final Jeopardy. Boom. Out again. But just for 30 minutes.
Just now went out briefly. What a pain. Six hours total today. Wouldnāt be surprised to have it go out again overnight. Been giving he oil lamp and spotlights a workout this week.
Low 20ās today but down to 5 tonight. While I donāt like single digit cold, I appreciate frozen ground instead of the mud and mess of the usual rain and low 30ās. And the pot holes are just starting to appear.
Getting warmer, finally. The mimosas, flowering quinces, almond trees and one pink flowering tree (a fruit tree) donā know what it isā¦yet. All in bloom. The French plant California poppies and pansies this time of year, and the flowers bloom like crazy. So pretty.
We had about 10 minutes outage yesterday - no idea why
