2 inches of snow here. Not bad for early December.

It looks so wintery outside. We haven’t had a proper snow cover in years.

Drizzly

was -12f this morning after 6in. of snow yesterday. struggled to get to 20. chics didnt stick a beak out except to get a quick drink. they hate the snow even more than the cold. a couple cups of cracked corn in the afternoon helps keep them warm in winter.

Look for Northern Lights tonight. Cloudy here. Was ten below last night. I hope the trees and bushes were fully hardened off!

Winter rain. Temps, 40’s- 60’s

We got a couple more inches of snow than expected (about 4"). Disrupted the last day of classes before final exam period. Though the snow is not entirely to blame for the disruption; Sun Belt championship game also helped.

Been colder here in zone 8a, but that’s shown a volunteer tomato to tolerate freezing temps!

This has to be the coldest December in 15 years. I can’t remember the last time we had snow and sub freezing temps early December.

Off-season rain! Pretty good amount too, supposed to rain all day into tomorrow. Low 70s/low 50s all week afterwards.

Another 3-4" snow. The old snow was getting shabby.

Temperature anomaly forecast for the week is pretty wild:

Any guesses why the Central Valley is so much colder than the rest of California right now?

Good question!

The answer is fog:

The Central Valley and some of the coastal valleys have been under a fog/low cloud layer for weeks now. It’s a phenomenon we call tule fog, and it used to be much more common in the 70s and 80s. Visibility can get close to zero, and there were some massive pile-ups involving over a hundred cars in the early 2000s. The fog helps stone fruit and pistachio growers reach chilling requirements though.
