Swamp White Oaks are the big ones in the front. In the back there are some American Beech and Chestnuts, but they are hard to see.
It was +2C a couple days ago, which is bizarre for my area of MB.
Temps swapped back to -40 with windchill within 24hrs. It’s only supposed to reach -37C tonight, but with 80km/hr winds and a quick 3" of snow.
It looks like I might be snowed in for the next few days.
I’ll bet a bobcat can do a number on orchard and garden pests.
-15 with a steady 20-30 mph wind tonight.
Edit…-14 last night but the wind calmed down. -1 tonight, then three nights in a row of -25 to -35. Sounds like possible -50 or colder windchill Thursday/Friday. Colder towards the Manitoba border. Not sure how the Canadians deal with it.
There’s hints of a serious looking snowstorm for the South starting Friday through the weekend. 12+” over a massive area.
Exact location of the rain/snow line is probably pretty uncertain at this point. The more reliable euro forecast shows it as being only rain and sleet in the southern row of states.
Edit: This one’s probably more realistic
not as cold here but still -4f sat and sun. with -15f at night. with windchill it could get -20 to -25. if you live in the prarie provences you just learn to accept it.
NC has seen some big snows in the 2010s but it warmed up nicely after the two notable events. I haven’t seen anything like this since 2000, a big snow followed by very cold temps for a while. This one seems to be much more expansive than the surprise 2000 snow.
Hmm yeah my MB forecast is dealing me 60-80km winds beginning tomorrow, which will bring temps down into the -30’s from Wed-Sunday.
I’m not looking forward to finding out what the windchill factor will be on top of that.
-7F for a HIGH temp on Friday. Help.
Yikes. That looks nasty. Lots of freezing rain too.
Next week looks ugly and keeps getting worse. Happy for the snow, but the lows are predicted to be 7-9 most of the week! Eek! Not to mention, if we actually get a foot of snow as predicted, my county will shut down schools for most of the week!! Worrying about my containers and my sanity…
-16 for a high here Friday.
It can always be worse…
We hit our coldest night so far, at just over 24. It has been a warm weather though
SHH…ol’ man winter might hear you. ![]()
More rain starting again tomorrow for four days straight!
It’s kind of humorous to see the hand wringing here about the coming “dangerous and abnormally cold temperatures”. There is nothing abnormal about -16 below for a high or -50 windchill here. It’s MN. It gets really cold here every damn year. Lol
When I lived in RI in zone 7 a-b, the thought if late winter-early spring frosts was horrible. Seeing ice or frost on any limb was upsetting. I remember losing almost all of my crops one year. Minnesota, is truly Arctic! Newport , RI was not.
Yeah places like Tower and Embarrass pull -40° in many winters. It happens. But everything is hype-city now.
I know. I’m just thinking back 2 winters when we dipped below 0F…twice? something crazy like that. It was such an easy winter to get thru. I was thinking that might be the new normal. Nope. I agree this cold isn’t anything to get excited about. We usually get at least one -20F every winter.. We avg over 20 times below 0F.
The climate along the MN/Ontario border can be far colder than here. A lot of times that cold air seems to just stop in that area.
Playing around with a European site that offers free imagery daily (if there isn’t cloud cover). Can see the south end of Lake Superior is starting to ice up. That lake hasn’t frozen much in years–almost needs a good cold winter to remove some heat. This was yesterday.
