dropping into the upper 60’s- low70’s after today.
Moderate drought on the last report. I imagine we’ll hit severe status this week or next
It went thru about 10. Tornados reported here and there.
still very hot and dry. I’ve had enough of this miserable heat next week I’m headed north about 1500 miles and I’ll just watch which way the wind blowing
In case anyone missed it, (in the USA) we’ve been in a strong El Niño since May 2026. Most of you should be in drought and heat. I will remember the changeover to El Niño in May 2026 by the hurricane force winds that came with it out west.
EDIT: Generally speaking based on hundreds of years of data, expect drought and heat next year too. It’s just like 2021 and 2022 except the calendar year numbers are 2026 and 2027. It will happen again approximately around 2031 to 2033.
There will be flooding and landslides in California during the coming winter and the upper midwest will be colder and drier than average. Just like happened/happens around 2021 and again 2031 to 2033.
104F today. Toasty.
I’d love to spend mid June thru September in Alaska. Fish on the ocean, rivers and lakes. Pick berries in the fall. Come back once the cold starts to really move in up there. Oct/November are usually pretty nice around here. At least the dewpoints are never in the 70Fs like today again.
Temp dropped about 25 degrees in a couple hours last night as this cold front came through. Rained all night. No complaints from me, sometimes we don’t get any rain in August.
I really feel so bad for all those affective by the fires. Don’t know how I would handle just being ready to evacuate for 24 hours or 48’hours .
I am probably the least informed on events in the country or the world. I just tune all the news out. I don’t do social media except for growing fruit
Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I was just told these fires were deliberately set and they arrested the person responsible. So snow packs managed burns and a host of other things really don’t factor in when you have someone that’s evil that wants to inflict pain on others.
they say alot of these fires are started by lightning but its such a big wild area affected that im betting theres more intentionally set than they let on or know. last i heard there were over 100 fires burning out there. the most are in OR, WA, and ID although most of the western states have fires going. i cant imagine living daily worrying if your house and town will be next. the biggest problem the firefighters are having is predictiion. erratic winds and steep terrain have made it near impossible to set up break lines and very dangerous to the firefighters. the fires themselves create their own winds and weather. where the term , firestorm was coined . prayers sent for those affected and 1st responders and smoke jumpers literally in the line of fire.
The only good thing is the days are getting shorter, the nights longer///cold air can start building again in the high latitudes. Start scouring out some of this humidity. Push it back to the Gulf coast.
I was only referring to the Spokane fire. Like I said, I may have the information wrong, but I was told someone was arrested supposedly, he confessed to starting one of the Spokane fires if that is true, you can’t blame it on anything else except one evil person hurting many people and putting their lives at risk
In Los Angeles I once heard a radio commentator say: for 20 million people and all the crazies who live here, the percentage who start wildfires is surprisingly low.
They installed hidden cameras in the forests around Los Angeles that photograph every car that goes by to identify – even by unique scratches and replacement hub caps – every car that drives into the forests. Those cameras have caught repeat-offender arsonists.
I had found a research paper from the 70s when i was just looking up how often Ontario burns and in it, they said humans were probably the cause of many fires thru cigs and campfires. Native Americans also burned the forests in the distant past because the new forest held much more game than the mature stands.
Big blob of rain over Iowa and Minn this morning heading into S Wisconsin. Should be wet for at least a good chunk of the day here. Will keep temps in check.
105F today
showers and a few thunderstorms. low 70’s. if it wasnt for the showers, we likely would be in near drought. havent had a solid rain since early july.
twenty years ago this guy would have caused minimal damage
we are in drought, the climate and weather has changed, and now he can burn thousands of acres. same crime. different damage. the capability for these crimes to cause mass damage and deaths has gone way way up. sure yeah there’s a guy. twenty years ago he would have been arrested for burning an acre or a single building. fifty years ago, maybe a building, a patch. things have changed
doesn’t matter if it’s lightning, a firecracker, a pyromaniac. what used to be a smaller problem is now regional and massive. we’ve always had this little handful of firebugs. they’ve always been trying to catch arsonists. it used to be incredibly rare for one to set a fire of any true size. now, they watch the weather and pick their day and burn thousands of acres. if you cannot see the difference I’m not sure you pay attention.
at any rate finally we have relatively good aqi today. no rain really in town on the forecast but it is cooling off a tiny bit this week.
i want rain. nice solid no-lightning rain. for a full day. again. I’m begging
They definitely did that as part of the Palisades fires. In fact the multiple fires being lit in close proximity on the same day screamed “inorganic.”
he watched for a high fire danger day with wind. he waited for it.
we didn’t used to have days like that, over such large areas.
it’s scary how much damage they can do now.
I consider the guy a terrorist. He attacked the entire city of Spokane with fire. He knew what he was doing No rain in sight here I haven’t kept up with it, but I hope Spokane is getting some rain .I think there are a lot of areas of the country right now that would go up like a Tinder box.
