You are at the Northern tip of Maine…far away from the worst of it. The Maine coast is a total flood zone right now between the rain, wind and high tide…129,154 in the state without power now
Haha! I delivered newspapers in the early 70’s on Sunday mornings it was so cold you could barely breath. We made it into a snowball fight and walked a mile down to the Jolly Roger donut shop for breakfast at 4am… ![]()
i knew you guys were getting it much worse but they missed the mark by a long shot here. how high gusts you see at your location?
my wife’s credit union is closing at 3. lol! barely sleeting or blowing right now. goats sitting out on their cable spool.
I did a little shoveling and ran back inside. That wind is brutal.
I had gym 8th hour (this was the 90s) and we had swimming during winter (indoor pool) and would walk home right after and my hair would freeze. I like swimming, but i hated those swimming courses.
Says 11% Humidity on the gauge on my front porch right now. I’m pretty certain I’ve never seen that low a humidity in Florida in my 33 years here. 43 degree temp with bright sunshine. Calling for wind chill tonight of 5 degrees. ![]()
I don’t have specific speed or gust details…I’d say constantly in the high 20s/low 30s with gusts to maybe 50 mph. I’ve seen pictures of Portland Headlight damage…way up on those bluffs there are busted windows, flooding and stones/pavers scattered eveywhere.
I did a little research because i saw 1990 mentioned by the NWS in Denver. After that record breaking cold shot on dec 22 of 1990, the rest of the winter was very warm for Denver. lots of 40Fs/50Fs and even 60Fs. Only a couple of days dropped below 0F (-4F i think was the coldest). I also looked at La Crosse for Dec thru April 1990-91 (we also had a very cold shot this time of year) and it was also very mild afterwards. Obviously it could still be the coldest winter of all time, but at least that winter showed a December cold snap means nothing and winter can still be super warm.
11% humidity is about what our winters are like. why -20 on a sunny day with no wind feels pretty good. the spring and falls when its cold and damp feels alot worse.
Around zero here in Shenandoah valley of Virginia. Wind to about 25. Sleet last night but only flurries today. The front windows on my 125 year old house have ice on the inside. My heart goes out to those trapped on roads or without any heat.
I had typing first class and fingers just wouldn’t cooperate. We had to walk over to the technical school at 830 and I remember it being frigid those days in the 70s. My typing teacher would shout out a cadence with an incredibly southern twang–p (pronounced pay) semi p space. Looking up front space…
I don’t recall disliking winter until my 20s, but i just remembered that frozen hair annoying me. There was some nasty winters back in the day.
Stuck at -1F all night. Winds still howling to 30mph but they should let up some.
New Orleans in the mid 20Fs, teens in N Florida… Orland sitting at freezing. They got the winter jackets on in Miami which is in the upper 40Fs.
We’re all the way up to 12, after -1 early this morning. After all day below zero yesterday it seems a bit more tolerable. Might get more snow on Monday, but looking forward to the 50s on New Year’s.
15 F
at 3:30 p.m.
But,
already dropping
here!
Made it to a whopping 9F, but with sunshine it felt a heck of a lot better than yesterday. Wind is down to 14 now, so getting better. Still showing -5F overnite.
Alberta clipper on its way for sun/mon. Should get another 1 to 3 inches of snow. That would put us over 20 inches of snow so far this season.
South winds right now–should see the 20Fs today. Cold snap is finally over. Back above freezing for the extended.
supposed to hit low 40’s and rain by the weekend here. good bye snow.
It’s going to be raining here later, I’m glad I dumped out 2 compost bins yesterday and fertilized some of my fruit trees. The fruit trees are looking good. I can’t wait for next year.
We finally made it back to freezing at noon today. So, that was about 107 hours below 32°. Snow’s still on the ground, and it’s cloudy, but it should be gone by the weekend when we hit 60 and rain.
