How Many Persimmon Trees for Personal Consumption

Lena and Morris B. were both stellar. Definitely deserving. C-100 is a dud. Cliff showed me the tree and described it as “living up to the opposite of the hype” - it was a small fruit, tasty, nothing to write home about. Meader is smallish, but the flavor is quite good. I’d have to pick H63a and Lehman’s Delight as being in my personal top 2. H-63a is something special. Lehman’s U20A / Celebrity is also in my top 10 alongside those two. Yates/Juhl can be bland some years, I find it doesn’t …

For personal consumption (no dried leather), maybe I’ll try to make persimmon pudding. How many trees would be ideal. 30 seems a bit more than I really need (Got to keep my OCD tendencies in check). Seems like 6-8 ripening early-to-late would be enough?

I have more than 1. But realistically, 1 tree will produce all the persimmons that one person can eat fresh.

I have way more persimmons than I really need… but they are so easy here with my abundance of nice free rootstock.

Journey Hybrid and Mohler … think these will be a nice early mix.

H63A & WS8-10 & Kasandra… mid season ?

Zima Khurma, Nikitas Gift - late season ?

But then some are just way different… like my 3 asians… IKKjiro, Cardinal (non astringent) and then Saijo.

It would be nice to have persimmons ripening late July to November.

I get figs and raspberries from Aug to November as well… so many good things to eat.

Lots of wild persimmons here. Never get a single fruit. Between bugs and fungi; they are ruined. Too wet I guess???

@dannytoro1 … it is hot and humid here… late spring thru summer… but in the fall it normally gets much drier… some of our wild persimmon trees will hold fruit into December and it is still delicious.

The little roadside tree I collect from near our Walmart… the year I first noticed it… it was first week of December and it still had 30 or so persimmons hanging on.

I neglected to mention that I picked up 3-4’ Rosseyanka, Morris Burton and Nakita’s Gift from Chestnut Hill. The site is 6B so pure kaki won’t work.

So following your planting focus on getting Journey, Mohler H63A, WSG8-10 & Kasandra. That brings it to 8 core plants. I have about 50 seedlings in tree pots that I plan to scatter. They will be the eventual wildlife food. The core 8 above are for me!
