How soon is too soon for grafting avocado rootstock?

Other than needing to reach a sufficient diameter, are there other considerations for when to graft onto seedling rootstock? Should you wait for them to go through a dormant then budding cycle? For example, is this Mexicola seedling not yet ready (still finishing first growth spurt from seed)?

Still waiting to see which of my last batch of grafts take, but more scions on the way next week and I’m counting branches on the larger trees and coming up slightly short. :grimacing:

if you’re in the humid tropics, sufficient diameter is all that really matters. Avocado grafts will take at any time of year. If in areas with 4 seasons, spring to early summer would be the best time, when new growth with warmer weather is observed.

For now I’m doing this indoors under lights, and I’m putting humidity domes or bags over all the new grafts, so hopefully this one will do ok. Future seedlings will be in a greenhouse. Thanks for the info!
