I planted a Callery Pear in the hole left from stump grinding a 50+ year old Black Walnut that succumbed to Thousand Canker disease. The soil around this tree was rarely raked and was deep in composted leaf litter. I’ve never seen a happier tree, that Callery is probably pushing 40ft at 10 years old, and two to three times the diameter of a Crimson maple I planted at the same time about 30 ft away.
