How to Husk Black Walnut green husks

Hi

Want to easily remove your green husks from black walnuts?

Ok. Get a two foot piece of 2 x 4. then get two short pieces 3 1/2 x 2 x 4. Attach the short pieces crosswise at each end of the two foot piece, to make a squat ‘H,’ with screws.

Now drill a 1" dia hole, then a 1 1/4" dia, then a 1 1/2" dia, then a 1 3/4" dia hole in the long 2x4 piece, each about 3 1/2" apart, while leaving about 3 1/2" between the edge of the short pieces on either end.

Put on your rubber gloves and grab a green nut with husks, and then position it over the approximate size hole you expect the nut to be and give it a wallop.

Bam off comes the husk!

Sounds great do you by chance have a picture of it?

mine is out on loan to a club member so here is a sketch…patrick

Hi, I put the nuts in the driveway (gravel) and drive over them a few times with the tractor until the husks come off then soak them for a few hrs in a bucket then spray them off. A power sprayer works best.

One of those old corn shellers works good. I think we used to have one that was hand powered. Or maybe it had a small elec motor.

You guys may know but mange and rin gworm effect people and animals and those husks are a treatment for that fungus.

PlumHill I used to do that, but now I sit down and go Bam Bam Bam

Patrick,
Cool idea. Thanks for sharing.
