@snarfing @Noddykitty my beloved, babied and murdered Red came from Flying Fox. He was great and helpful and it was a steal at the time.. I’m still tearful about this loss.
The Scarlet came from an Etsy seller in PR. Very legit, was inspected and showed up via usps in just 2 days. I was expecting more roots sadly this is definitely a barely 2yo plant. I had been debating all winter between there and Green Dreams. I’ll be splurging at Green Dreams for a Red replacement.
I have never hated squirrel more. It was clearly premeditated (happened while I was gone) and revenge for teaching my dog to keep it out of the yard.

I forgot to update- the 2g Red Jabu from Green Dreams is beautiful. Great roots filling out the container. Easily 2 years older than the other two plants I’ve bought. It was up potted to a 5g when I got it, I pruned off a little bit of the skinnier growth from the base and has been slowly putting on new growth. I plan to slowly prune one or two of the skinny extra trunks as the summer goes on. The new Scarlet is also growing. I have both quick-fix netted to prevent anymore tragedies. I need to get some bigger sticks and make a more legit net structure. Scarlet is in dappled shade to full shade and Red gets a bit of early sun to dappled to shade. I wish it would rain for them as I’ve had to water them with the hose. Brutal drought.

@Eme You could put a tomato cage around the pots, then net the cage. That’s what I did this year with my currants and gooseberries (just posted a pic in a new thread). Your plants are beautiful!
What’s the consensus on the faster fruiting hybrid Precoce that Logee’s sells? Fruit no good? The idea of 3 years to fruit is enticing, zone 9-10 and a minimum of 50F/10C not so much…

I never came across that one with my research; it’s not sold at any of the places that have a bigger variety of them. Based on my limited experience with them, I really wouldn’t buy a quart sized plant. They grow so slowly. “Scarlet” is the only one I read as potentially a shorter road to fruiting, but that’s under ideal conditions, which I certainly don’t have. @Richard has a book he recommends about them that I think is in the thread about one of his in Vista. Nomenclature for these is apparently rife with errors.

Good to know about the slow growth rate. If they grow so slowly, I’d for sure kill them before they ever attempted to fruit what with having to overwinter them indoors. Really too bad, it’s such an interesting tree.

The label ‘jaboticaba’ has become a gross generalization used by US online sellers for seedlings of species and a few cultivars in the Pliniinae subtribe of Myrtaceae.
Among botanists, ‘jaboticaba’ is the common name for species Plinia cauliflora. ‘Scarlet jaboticaba’ is the common name for the hybrid Plinia cauliflora × Plinia aureana. Note that regardless of the claims of sellers, none of the Pliniinae grow true to type from seed.

do you think itd be worth it to occasionally water with distilled water instead of hose? i buy it for my cpap so ican spare some.
Distilled water has pH 7. Plinias prefer 5 < pH < 6.
is that accurate? theres like no buffering quality so i thought usually the co2 disovled brings it down. I mean freshly distilled yes, but not like sitting out for a bit.
But more about mineral content. I also dont know that the ph is that meaningful when theres no buffering
Maybe by a tenth. Certainly not below pH 6.
I recommend liquid and soil pH probes by Hanna.

Distilled water is devoid of minerals, I think it would be almost toxic to plants in the way drinking only distilled water is very harmful for people.
That is deionized water. But I meant as some watering to flush of salts yes
Upgraded Red to a tomato cage net and made a few more little pruning cuts taking away scraggly low branch and a scraggly little trunk. There are still a few more “trunks” and low branches I want to eliminate. Thinking I will do one cut each month if it is continuing to put on nice new growth all summer.
Little Scarlet is doing great as well putting on new growth and was also upgraded to a tomato cage net, so it’s not as cramped. Both have occasionally needed to be watered (with citric acid) since we are in a drought. But, it’s raining now!

Drinking only distilled water isnt particularly harmful to humans though. And isnt particularly harmful to plants either as far as I know. You won’t have any luck growing them in just distilled water without soil for very long but thats just because there’s no nutrients besides water so eventually they won’t have enough to grow.

Put on some new growth since i got him. I went with coast of Maine ocean for the potting soil on the basis of google and he seems to be doing well. I also have barelybeen watering it. Read wait until you think you need to water, then wait 3 more days its put on a few new branches aboht 2-3 inches long.
I did jot know they shed their bark when I got it and that gave me a panic lol

Continuing to chronicle my jaboticabas:
Both Scarlet and Red2 have WAA. Didn’t know that could happen. Rubbed it off. Hope they aren’t in the roots. @Luisport you have so many of these plants- do you ever seen WAA on them (do you even have that where you live) and if so, do you see them damaging the roots? I can manage any on the top by rubbing off, but for the soil, can they tolerate neem oil?
It’s over 100, and I noticed these at the end of my outdoor garden time didn’t have the energy to remove netting for better pictures. I’m positive it was WAA based on being identical to what I had on apples last year.
Aside from this latest negative development, they are both growing beautifully. So much so, that I might get a “Yellow” in the near future.
