How to know when its too Late to prune trees?

We have an old, mature quince, it really needs some pruning. I noticed Green leafy buds starting to emerge from the branches, is it too Late to prune the tree?

It is the end of March here in zone 6b.

Will the tree not divert energy to the leaf buds which will remain after pruning, or should i go All in (of course leaving something to be pruned next year, so the tree is not stressed :slight_smile:)?

It’s okay to prune,but don’t take off,probably more than a third.

Pruning is something that can be done year round for different reasons. Winter/spring pruning is to shape and do maintenance on a tree while summer pruning is used to control vigor and promote fruiting buds.
