Found the central leader on a 2 yr old apple fallen over about 3 feet from the top. Upon closer inspection a borer made its way into the stem and hollowed out a 6in section. How can this be prevented? Thanks for any help.

You could try wrapping flyscreen around the trunk in early spring. Then keep a close eye on the upper part of the trees for borer activity, and use pyrethrum or similar injected in holes to kill any grubs. The borers like to lay eggs in cracks in the bark. Pure neem oil can be effective too.
