Nice. That fruit shape definitely resemble Harbin mature Dar Sofiyivky fruit. At least this way that We know it is the right cultivar circulating in the US

Hi Jay
I have a new graft of Dar Sofiyivky that has grown well since I grafted this spring. It’s on a 2 year old lotus rootstock in a 3 gal pot. I placed it today in my greenhouse to extend its ability to produce more buds that I hope to use next year to graft a large number of dv rootstocks I recently received. My thinking is that it will be at least 3-4 years anyway before it would produce fruit, so meanwhile I can help proliferate this scare sought variety.
I estimate it will grow at least thru most of December here before it’s too cold in the greenhouse. How much ammonium nitrate would you recommend I give it and when? Should I wait for dormancy to fertilize?

Not sure on Ammonium nitrate, as I don’t use that myself. I would use per the package recommendations. Is the tree actively growing still? If so, I’d maybe let it settle down first.
So @OckooMicrofarm gave an update on the status of this variety in the US. It appears some of us may not have the real deal.
I unknowingly lucked into picking up VD from England’s during my visit to the orchard. We’ll see how it compares to those I have labeled as Dar Sofiyivky in a year or two hopefully.
That confirms the rumor. Gotta wonder how many folks wound up with that doppelgänger. My wood came directly from a ukrainian guy , so hopefully legit, but time will tell. I have a couple sticks of ‘sosnovskaya’ that will hopefully make it until next year. not much grafting for me this year.
Would love to understand how to rule out VD prior to fruiting. It seems it must be possible unless I’m misreading what he wrote.
Bud type is unique on Dar Sofiyivky.
Do you have pictures of that bud type? I think what I have labeled as Dar Sofiyivki has pretty distinctive buds, but for all I know they could be distinctly incorrect.
Buds won’t tell you anything. You just have to wait for the fruits.
Notice the unique star shaped wrapped up calyx lobes only typical for Dar Sofiyivky:

Hi Harbin
Can you take some close up photos of the leaves. This will also help to ID the real DS. @Harbin
Tony
Leaves are gone now.
I took a close up screen shot of your old DS photos. I think this will help to ID the real one. Pay attention to the serrated leaf edge also.

Interesting, I got mine from Timmothy directly. Hopefully next year we start getting some fruit set and we can have some more answers.
Just to be clear, I received a grafted tree from Dax and planted it middle of 2023. In spring 2024, I distributed scionwood to 10 people here on GF. At this point, I believe it to be the legit Dar Sofiyivky. I am however going to attempt to procure some scionwood from a known producing tree this winter. I want to have a dozen or so growing trees of this variety.
I do not know anyone who has a producing tree of V. Derevyanko but would love to see fruit pictures.
I have a grafted tree from Dax as well, I am hopeful this is all sorted out and we as a group can get the correct tree out. Having the wrong one shared widely as has happened with other varieties of various species makes things less enjoyable for all. Sometimes mistakes are made (and that is OK) but it is good for them to be corrected.
I’m along for the ride and excited to trial whatever trees I have growing in the coming decades.
Same here. I believe what I have came through the Dax channel, so we’re in the same boat. I didn’t think to look closely at the color of the wood when I was grafting. I may have to take a peek in the spring.
He said the lenticles are fairly distinct and the shape of the buds is pretty unique.
The V. Derevyanko I have he took a look at too (from someone else’s photos) and said it is clearly a different bud.
