I tried Honey Jar Jujube for the first time this evening

..and man, i really enjoyed it. crisp, refreshing, sweet… its like an apple only in its crunch. no tartness whatsoever, and thats okay for this fruit. the skin adds an earthy complexity that i didnt mind because it tastes healthy. the skins flavor reminds me its organic no spray and right from the earth.

honestly i like honey jar jujube more than apples… i love apples, but honey jar hit me in a way ive never felt from apples. I wouldnt say HJ is better than a good pear though. i feel like pears are more diverse and complex.

i pulled a rootstock sucker last month, dipped in rooting hormone powder and repotted. it’s still looking good. Fingers crossed. Hopefully in a season or two i can graft on HJ. Ill bring indoors for a bit during fall to encourage more root growth (if any has even started)

i dug a hole, put a 100 gallon steel container in the hole and filled it up with the dirt, holes drilled with gravel under the container and in it. 2nd leaf it produced about 30 jujubes. 1st one ripened today. it needed thinned out bc kept pushing little jujubes slowing down the bigger ones.

its thorns are small so deer still browse a little, but not much. the only downside is aggressive roots. other than that i love honey jar jujube

Here’s a crab apple seedling i dug up from the yard. its doing well and i plan to graft galarina to it next spring and give to family or the local park, idk yet.

I also spotted this cool metallic chrysalis tonight lol im sharing everything

That description is making me want to try one. The skin adding earthiness rather than bitterness is the bit I wasn’t expecting, most fruit skins just get in the way.
