I have 3 tags in the pot, only 1 plant. Columbia Giant, Galaxy and Big Daddy. I think it is Columbia Giant? thanks
Based on its size (well over 2 inches long) and the shape of the fruit, Columbia Giant is a very likely match. Columbia Giant is known for producing huge, elongated blackberries that can reach or exceed 2 inches, which matches what you’re seeing. Galaxy and Big Daddy both produce large berries too, but they usually don’t get quite as long or slender as Columbia Giant’s trademark giant, elongated fruit. Galaxy tends to have rounder, slightly shorter berries, and Big Daddy’s fruit is typically big but more uniformly conical. So unless you see different fruit shapes on new canes, it’s a good bet your plant is Columbia Giant.
Thanks for confirmation. I had Columbia Sunrise too but it died because I didn’t protect. (I am growing in containers) Any idea if Gurney’s Sweet Giant is synonym to another blackberry?
The growth habit of the plant will also help you tell the difference. Big Daddy is semi-erect and will grow straight up while Columbia Giant is a trailing variety which will grow more like a vine which can’t support it’s own weight. The leaves on Columbia Giant also have a lumpy appearance while the leaves on Big Dady are much smoother.
The fruit pictured is 1-3/4 inches long.
there about. Long and slender.
