If your Sunred nectarine looks like a peach, has fuzz like a peach, it’s a peach
Someone please tell my I’m wrong.

Did you get that from Willis? My sunred from them was definitely a peach. I kinda assumed it was Lovell or some other rootstock. It took cleft grafts really well, though, and now it’s 2/3 something I want, with the nurse scaffold ready for a third variety next year.
I bought it at Walmart. It was clearly labeled and has a definite graft junction at the correct place. I’m guessing that it is a peach that was incorrectly labeled. It bloomed late which was a good quality as it escaped the late cold snaps. Surround also appears to cling to the fuzz so keeping it protected from PC should be easier. I have already added grafts of pluots and plums so if it’s a dud it can be quickly converted.
Ah well at least you don’t have too much emotionally invested. Hopefully, it will be a good one! Mine produced peaches last year when nothing else did, and they were pretty decent. I am only working it over as an excuse to get some variety in my harvest window. {Even though we’ve had three years of weird weather since I started orcharding, so I don’t know for certain what my harvest window is!}
No doubt, it’s a duck.
If it’s fuzzy, it’s a peach. Even before it blooms the ovary will give away whether it’s a peach or nectarine.
Walmart tag switchers strike again! Someone may have got a sunred nectarine for the price of a peach! May have been Walmart themselves or even the supplier. Been burned there myself but I will definitely cut a wide path around their trees.
I wanted a nectarine but a good peach is okay with me. When you buy from a big box store incorrect labels are possible and I assume the risk that goes with the lower price. Most of the time they are correctly labeled if you buy as soon as their inventory arrives. I don’t think I will lose any sleep over it. I’m actually excited to see what kind of peach I have.
Maybe a kind member has a stick of that nectarine and you can have your cake and eat it too.
That happened to me this year. Fruitnut broke the news. I too bought from a big box store.
Six years ago the same thing happen to me, except I got the nectarine.
