If you grow «Pineapple» quince in California this question is for you

Hi:

Just bought some quinces, Pineapple variety. They were shipped here from a fruit/veg distributor (Visalia Produce) I find this variety to be very fragrant, way more than my «Giant of Zagreb». After a quick search I found those do not come from Croatia but… Serbia. Another story…

My quinces: Giant of… Serbia???

Pineapple quinces:

So I would like to try growing the pineapple variety from seeds I will collect in the coming days when preparing them . I know growing from seeds can be problematic but would like to try for fun. My only hesitation: Since they were developed for central California will they be hardy enough to grow here at my location? If Giant of Zagreb/Serbia grow well here will Pineapple do the same or should I forget about growing them altogether because of my colder hardiness zone?

Thanks!

Marc

Hi Larry:

Some people would describe this figure as irony, others would call it: sarcasm. Chose the term you like the most…

First snow of the year. It’s about time. A few more days and my 1,875 days would be ever higher or lower. I don’t know which…

I think any quince in Zone 5 is a big stretch.

@Stan: I like difficult endeavors without them life is worthless. Marc

I can appreciate either irony or sarcasm.
I thought one less zero (4,500) could be believable.
Some areas in Washington state average over 3000.

I’d call it hyperbole.

If you do grow from seed, let us know how they turn out. Quince graft easily, so if you have an established tree that doesn’t produce good fruit, you can convert it to Pineapple or another that does.

Please don’t call the trees “Pineapple” if they are seedlings. That will lead to confusion. If you want Pineapple quince, it needs to be clonally propagated. If its a seedling, its something new, whose parent is Pineapple.

You’d be growing pineapple seeds, not growing pineapple from seed.
