I'm thinking of selling my place and getting out of growing fruit

I’m about 98% certain that’s what’s going down. It’s a shame because I’ve just learned how to grow great fruit with zero pesticides. But my future is in Arvada CO just NW of Denver near my daughter. There will be a lot about that area I don’t like but maybe I’ll spend my winters in TX or FL. Right now, my daughter could use some help caring for a sick relative.

I plan to stick around this forum but maybe not as regularly. I’ll be very busy until I get moved. And first I’ve got to sell this place which won’t be easy.

Life really throws us curve balls sometimes. Hope it works out well for you all.

This is a slow pitch down the middle. I just need to keep my eye on the ball and it will be a hit.

Good luck with the sale and move.

I can envision a day where I am done with fruit and this acreage too.

It’s good to hear that even someone as passionate about fruit growing as yourself can still have his priorities in the right place. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Really sorry to hear that you will have to depart with your passion and great accomplishments in your greenhouse at Alpine. Life is tough, and oftentimes we have to make very hard decisions. I have learned a lot from you Steve, and I cherish our online friendship. I can only wish the best for you…

I haven’t been on here as a member long, but definitely long enough to learn to appreciate your contributions. I’m sure I haven’t yet found half of the useful information you’ve posted in the past.

I hope the sale goes smoothly for you and you get a good price. Also hoping for a smooth move for you. Hopefully you find a good place there that suits you at this point in life. Whether that means acreage and some old apple trees, or a small rental with no yard maintenance, I hope the Good Lord provides whatever is best suited to your needs.

Good luck and thanks for all your contributions!

Right now I’m looking at a townhome that’s a 5 minute walk from my daughter’s place. It’s on a creek with plenty of hiking trails. And there are plenty of places nearby that have roads up into the mountains.

This would be a good opportunity for a home business. At age 78 my daughter and I selling fig plants grossed one year sales equal to what I’ll be asking for the place. Just her growing in a small room in her house with my cuttings and no prior experience. And me with no help here in Alpine. This is a very low-cost property to live to live on. Could be a business and is a world class organic fruit growing operation. Or some of both.

Steve,

Good luck with your new place and to be close to your daughter. I am pretty sure your figs operation will be a hit. Stay in touch. Your contribution to this GF forum always helpful.

Hi Tony: The only thing you lack in life is a greenhouse like mine. With your skills no telling what you could do. And it’s so much easier than growing outside. I often think why am I wasting time growing outdoors when it’s so much easier and more productive inside.

This is a question you’ve likely asked yourself, but can you rent it to someone else capable of caring for the place? It could turn what has been a win-win for you and the daughter into a win-win-win that includes a tenant and allows you to at least have access to what you’ve built.
The answer is yours, so don’t feel like it needs to be elaborated upon here.

Fruit can still grow there too. And you can get into Northern Greenhouses!

Steve, I seldom post here, most of my activity was back on the Dave Wilson forum. I’m still growing grape varieties from your recommendation there. I have followed your posts and always learn something from you.

Wish you all the best in your new venture and am glad to hear that you will drop in occasionally.

I’m not going to say it has been nice knowing you though it has. I’m going to say “I hope to continue knowing you for many more years.”

While I’m sorry you never made peace with modern chemistry , I fully understand your choice and appreciate your priority. I’m obsessed with my orchard but would give it up in a second if my son needed me nearby to help him (I hope he never will, but someday, not too far from now, I may move close to him so he can help me)…

You’ve mastered your hobby craft so it should be fine to move on to this next chapter- I have a sister in Denver with a nephew and niece and the nearby wilds are incredibly beautiful- the place may grow on you- it’s just that now heating becomes more important than air-conditioning. Actually, my sister dresses up for the cold and loves winter as much as summer.

I am sorry you are moving where you won’t even be keeping a small garden- that would offer more incentive for you to stay involved with this forum and your e-friends here. Those we truly know and deeply care about are the only truly nourishing fruit from life’s tree.

Thank you for all of your interesting in-put here over the years. .
