Indian / Chinese Jujube?

Wanted to share my new experience with ziziphus mauritiana…
I’m in zone 9a and the tips hardly died back last winter with lows around 25F. This winter I had lows around 20F and all the branches were dead except one. Last month I was surprised to see some green poking through on the main trunk, so I pruned all the dead branches. A month later there is huge growth out of the trunk!

Here’s a photo of the Indian jujube tree fruit from the tree I’m planning to do air layers.

WOW, that’s huge!

Will you be selling any of the air layers?

I bought some Indian jujube seed recently which proved easy to sprout. I have two seedlings and may plant the rest of the seed in which case I’d expect about a half dozen seedlings.

The seedlings themselves seem fairly vigorous and while a bit spindly haven’t had any issues so far despite a lot of aphids and spider mites on nearby plants.

Anyone know how long they might take to fruit? I’m thinking I’ll use them as rootstocks if it’ll be more than a few years for them to produce from seed.

Well I’m so busy and don’t have time to start the air layers, but that was my original plan. I was going to do maybe 20 air layers and split the profit from the sale with the tree owner. Problem is, I hear from some people that have successfully air layered jujube, they say it could take about 6 months so I will need to start in June. This tree is massive, trunk about 10" diameter, it grows well over the garage roof, I already cut it back 2 times. I should have grafted some but no one wanted to buy cuttings on the TFF. I do have people on the Advance Wait list for these air layers. I did successfully get some air layers on the Indonesian Seedless guava tree so I’m happy about that, but none on the CORG tree I did. Also got my first air layer on a Sylvia guava (Carmine type) that is about 1-1/2" diameter.
