Hi all. Im new to the forum and looking to learn about some crazy cultivars/varieties/sports/landraces/hybrids of temperate fruits. There is tons of diversity out there and i want to be awed by some of the coolest things.
Some of the things ive learned about that i think are cool include:
Improved large fruited less tart sea buckthorn’s
Pink fleshed pears
Karps sweet quince
Medlar x hawthorn natural cross
Improved medlar selections
John Hersheys improved pecan hybrids, persimmons, and honey locust.
I tried cherums (cherry x plum) recently from the grocery store and they were ok. Obviously terrible cuz grocery store fruit sucks but they were alright. Pawpaw hybrid seems cool. Always wanted to try all the other asminia species. Orange flesh crab apples sound awesome. I was intrigued by the pink fleshed ones but never knew of orange ones!
Pink fleshed apples are worth adding to the list. Redlove series and a few older varieties like Weirouge have proper pink/red flesh all the way through, not just the skin. They look bizarre when you slice them. Flavor is decent but honestly you grow them because they’re just interesting to have around.
My graft on a stamans winesap is more vigorous than its host. The tree didnt get most of the sprays that it would have if it was fruiting so its a bit scabby. I look forward to hopefully giving them a shot next year
i grafted a scion of Giant Russian crab from Queener nursery onto my black oxford. it took. leaf colors much darker than black oxford. supposedly as big as a full sized apple and bleeds red when cut. runs on the tart size with susceptibility from scab which isnt a big issue here. should make a good cider mix or a nice red apple sauce or red apple wine.
