Interesting looking wild blackberry, central NC

Anyone know what this species could be? Im wondering if I should take some cuttings. It looks really unique, but I also haven’t been exposed to many species of brambles. Growing in sand near Fayetteville. Will have to see what the berries look like when they ripen. It seems very dwarf, not sure how much of that is the nutrient deficient sand or genetics.

could be a dewberry. they are mostly trailing.

Looks like Sand Blackberry/Southern Dewberry - Rubus trivialis.

Like other dewberries, on the sweeter and juicier side. Fresh eating. Cooking not so much.

Seems in NC they say it grows 1 inch berries. Ours are shorter and roundish. Easy growers. But on the ground sucking bugs work them over. Try in pots and planters.

Looking at the thorns and leaves…doesnt look like a dewberry to me.

Looks like a sawtooth blackberry by the looks of the canes and thorns.

Other ones you may come across in NC are the sand blackberry and pennsylvania blackberry… which some think that the Pennsylvania and Sawtooth blackberry are the same…

Either/Or… if you take some root cuttings and provide them with a good place to take hold and more nutrient dense soil the berries are very tasty…and its a magificent plant for bees, butterflies and wildlife.

Not my pic but they can become prolific in the right conditions.

Looks like I’ll have to take a few cuttings for pots to see what they end up looking like in decent soil! Will report back

I was kind of shocked at how many berries this one is setting in pure sand with nothing else around

the northern dewberry i have is a mix of blackberry/ raspberry taste with a tart tang. its pretty big but not as productive as my blackberry but tastes better than the 2. might be because it was in a less than ideal soil with poor drainage. has few seeds and juicy. i saved a cutting from it before root rot got it and just as it started to put on growth the dog peed on it. i hope it comes back this spring. no life so far but the rasp. and b.b are just starting to wake. my fave bramble.

We have Northern, Southern and Swamp Dewberry in Georgia. Our yard has lots of Southern. Especially in the flower gardens. One plus is they love to run up chicken wire.
