Interesting potato behavior

I have very limited space for potato, so I always try to get two crops from the same patch. Red Pontiac works great for this purpose. I start picking it at the end of June for eating by digging in with my hands and getting the one that sized up as I need them. Some when in August I try to take all I can find of a reasonable size without disturbing the bush, so they do not sprout in fall. When weather gets cooler the potatoes that looked like dying start growing again and produce a second crop by October. This is not especially interesting, this is how it works every year for me. But this year I found something interesting. The green part of potatoes that was laying on the mulch produced small potatoes in every node and those small potatoes started to grow right away. Note, this part of the greens was not in the soil, just laying on top. Never saw anything like this before.
