Im thinking about growing Black Prince mulberry in zone 6b WV. What do you all think how cold hardy is it an how do you think it will do in zone 6b WV?
Im hopeful given its parentage. Its apparently commonly grown in Russia, Ukraine, Poland, and thereabouts. I tried topworking it in last summer but terrible weather stalled all mulberry growth for a stretch and the grafts failed. Im trying again this year though here in “zone 5” Vermont
The Russian and Eastern European websites list it as cold hardy to much lower than 6b but someone from Ukraine told me the US version of Black Prince is different from the Eastern European/Russian version
Only way to know is try it but I think yes it will be fine
@hobilus thank you hopefully they work out for you
@rubus_chief thank you that’s kinda what im worried about. Probably just have to try it
From Marta’s website reallygoodplants.com
“highly frost resistant” and she lists it as an alba (not a hybrid)
think it will be fine
Like @hobilus I am grafting Black Prince in the spring (onto an alba tatarica rootstock)
I might keep it in a pot for a year before planting it to overwinter this 1st winter inside - not sure
but in z6b you should be fine
