Is it too late to save this years plums from black knot?

Hey there, I have a methly plum that is down bad with black knot. Last year was the first year we had any fruit on it, but they were all pretty severely deformed and we didnt get a single fruit that didn’t shrivel up to a prune. I know it’s very late to try to do something but we do have fruit forming on the tree this year and I was wondering if there is anything I can do to save it at this point? In the future I will probably go the route of fungicides etc, even though I really don’t want to but I didn’t get to it this last winter. Just thought I’d ask the pros for any ideas! Thanks so much.

Black knot affects the limbs not the fruits. Without some pictures it’s hard to say what is happening. Do you have black knot growths on the limbs? You might have both black knot as well as some bugs in the fruits.

Nice looking plums. My experience is that black knot shows up on limbs. Although your issues don’t appear to be black knot, Methley at my location had a continuing black knot problem and I replaced it with AU Cherry which has a similar taste and is self fertile.

I wanted to ask the experts if this is black fungus and the brown is some sort of fungus or a tumor? These our branches, I removed from my Japanese plum tree in central Maryland.

@Thompkinz I agree with @Auburn that that is not black knot. The bottom picture is a rotted plum from last year, and the top one I don’t know what is but it’s not black knot. My guess is you are getting brown rot, that is what rots plums on the tree like that. Get some propiconazole and spray that.

@kakasamo that’s all black knot there. It starts greenish then goes light brown then dark brown then black. The earlier you get it the better so keep your eyes alert for green then brown then black as the season progresses, and remove immediately upon sight.

Black knot on Shiro plum…

If it shows up on a limb, cut it off and dispose of it. I didn’t because I didn’t know what it was until too late. I had to cut down the trees. If diseased plums were all I had, I would have left the diseased trees up. But I was worried about all my other trees. My Shiro and Green Gage were my favorites.
