Is it too late to tip layer a Marionberry?

Hello all,

is it too late to tip layer a marionberry? I have a marionberry plant in a 3 gallon currently and it is putting off a foot of growth a week basically with no signs of slowing down. I have read about tip layering and many people recommend to tip layer in May/early summer. I followed that advice with my Tayberry and currently have two shoots rooted in pots with new shoots already coming up from the soil. However, given it is early September, is it took late to try to tip layer my marionberry? It has at least 5 shoots that are easily over 5 feet long and I don’t have anywhere to train them along given it is still just in a small 3 gallon. It is tied to a bamboo stake but the shoots have already far exceeded the height of it. Or would I be better off going through the effort of trying to create some sort of vertical and lateral stake that could support some level of lateral training for all this extra growth?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks, Cole

If you have places to put more Marionberry, then tip layering seems like a good idea. Then, after you have new plants established, you can cut the ends and trellis the current shoots (ypu’ll probably need a bigger pot too…). Blackberries in general (I’m not sure about Marionberry) seem to tip root pretty quickly. I see tips just touching the ground and all of a sudden they have plenty of roots.
