I continue to be impressed with my Li jujube! High productivity, nice crunch, pretty sweet, a fair amount of juice and good size. Is there any jujube that is better that doesn’t comprimise on size, taste, texture or productivity? Im in the NC piedmont with red clay soil. Honeyjar and sugarcane lack size, and I plan to add black sea and autumn beauty as sucker grafts this spring.
Li is one of the bigger ones and most jujube don’t much care for the east coast. I’d check out some of Bob Vances post. He is on the east coast and has a pretty big collection of them. Sugar Cane and HJ might not be as big, but they sure do like to put out a lot of fruit. I have Black Sea also, but it’s just getting started. They are roughly the size of Sugar Cane. Your Li’s look bigger than my Li. Shanxi Li is one I was going to try next. It’s supposed to be roughly Li size and does well on the east coast.
you can try cultivars chico and sihong. They are not as productive as li, but fruits are generally much bigger than hj or sugarcane, and are of better eating quality in my opinion(of course taste is subjective).
Not sure how it will do where you are but one I like is Redlands 4. It is as big as Li, productive and sweet. On average only about 10% of Li fruit is good on my tree in North Texas. In the heat of the summer they ripen rapidly and is not that sweet or gets spongy.
Redlands 4 on the other hand is prolific for me and the fruit quality is fairly consistent from season to season and throughout the growing season . Not sure if it matters but mine is on a multi-grafted tree with a grafted Sherwood being the original tree.
