Is this an example of root or crown rot?

Is this an example of root or crown rot?
This nectarine tree has lost all of its leaves and doesnt look too healthy. If so is there anything that I can do to save it?

Was mulch piled up higher on the trunk in the past, then rotted down. Mulch piled high will do that. It also looks like you could potentially have some borer activity at the base of the tree. Drag the dirt back, wipe the goo off and look for borer activity. Sometimes the holes can be hard to see, so look closely for a borer hole.

9 times out of 10, when there is goo at the base of a peach/nect tree, it’s borer(s).
