Slow growing but can grow to 30 to 40ft or more.

@Zone6
That poster has conflicting information.
(1) Morus nigra is dead in USDA coldhardiness zones below 8.
(2) Morus nigra is not dwarf. As danzeb pointed out, it is very slow growing on its own roots but can reach 30+ ft in several decades. It is often sold grafted on M. alba, in which case it grows rapidly to 20-50 ft.

Dwarf Everbearing is a sub-tropical M. alba that is being marketed ad nauseum as M. nigra. Everything I have read about it from people growing it says it’s sweet but bland and definitely n̶o̶t̶ hardy to zone 5. It’s only real value may be it’s ability to produce multiple crops per year by stripping leaves or pruning.

I recently read that the sale of M. alba is restricted in Tennessee, Indiana and Illinois, yet this “M. nigra” is now being sold in Lowe’s and probably other garden centers here in Tennessee. I’m now wondering if this is a deliberate attempt to circumvent the restrictions on selling M. alba.

It definitely is hardy to zone 5 we got below -10F this winter and very little if any tip dieback on mine.

My source was baker creek but its one of those that gets pumped out of tissue culture nurseries by the thousands. Even 2-3mm cuttings had big roots in an aerocloner in under 2 weeks.

Good to know. I have seen many reports of freeze damage, but maybe that is due to the early bud break and spring frosts and not mid winter temps. How is the fruit? I have seen some reports that it gets better after a few years, but sometimes I have wondered if there are more than one of these in the trade.

I think you’re onto something.

I call mine dwarf neverbearing. It’s six feet tall now and hasn’t flowered in the six years since I planted it.

I wonder if it can be used as a dwarfing interstem or rootstock?
A lot of people are wondering how to dwarfing mulberries.
But the weeping mulberry is a good solution too.
