Almoat looks like an astilbe seedling.

Thanks for the tip but I would have to disagree. Astilbe has compound leaves, this does not. This is a tree seedling, astilbe is not. If it helps I’m in zone 5. This is a tree I’ve never seen growing in the woods. It has bark on the last year’s growth, the new growth is fuzzy. The upper leaf surface is sandpaper like.

Thanks hillbillyhort, I think you solved the mystery for me. I looked up images of birch seedlings and it appears identical. I’m pleased to have a birch tree, thanks for your help.
