Planted 11 10-12’ scotch pines 3 12’ Austrian pines so far this spring. Just planted a 20’ oak this morning. All here at my place.

Guy in town caught me and told me I could have a locust if I wanted because he was going to cut it down. I go look at it this morning, and it’s not a locust it’s an oak. He watches me dig it then tells me he was tired of all the seed pods. He wasn’t the kind you argue with, so I thanked him and left. As I drive away I notice the mature locust 30’ away.

Nice trees here! That oak looks handsome.

Each year I usually plant a large growing tree in the fall, for my birthday. So far I’ve planted 4 little-leaf lindens, one American linden, a red maple, a metasequoia (dawn redwood), four hybrid chestnuts, a crimson king maple, a european birch and a paper birch. Plus from seeds, four ginkgos and a maple that sprouted in the rose bed. I guess American persimmons also count as large growing trees, so two of those.

It’s amazing to stand next to a 20 or 30 or 40 foot tree, or taller, and think, “I planted that!”.

With climate zones changing, I like to experiment so that maybe future generations will have trees that are there because I planted them, too.

I have a woodlot with lots of scrubby trees, mostly cascara. Some probably 30 feet tall. They keep falling over which is hazardous. I’m gradually adding trees that I hope will be stronger growing and last longer.

Planted 75 bareroot Norway spruce today and will get the remaining 25 planted in the morning. Tomorrow afternoon I pick up my last evergreens of the year. 25 each tamarack and Norway spruce from my local SWCD. Should have them in the ground Saturday, then all I’ll have left to plant will be grafts from this year.
