It’s been so wet

How wet is it, Bryan?

It’s so wet, I have air roots on my apple.

That’s weird!

I’ve never see that on anything except super easy to root stuff like tomatoes.

Or sweet potato plants.

The apple picture looks like burrknots. I have them on the rootstocks of my Macoun and Cortland. I assumed they were M7, at least that’s what the nursery i ordered them from told me they were. But, when @alan saw the pics I posted earlier this year, he said he’s only seen that on M111.

Here are the pics I posted.

This tree is on M111.

What should I do?

I think it’s burr knot.

Here’s some description of burr knot
"Burr knots are root initials that appear on the aboveground portion of the apple tree trunk. Some rootstocks, such as M.7, M.9, M.26, MM.106, and MM.111, are more prone to developing burr knots than others. Conditions that favor burr knot development include low light, high humidity, and temperatures between 68°F and 95°F.

Burr knots are problematic in a couple of ways. They can be an entry point for organisms, such as dogwood and plum borers, woolly apple aphids, fire blight bacteria, and wood-rotting fungi. A tree with a heavy fruit load and many burr knots may produce weak growth or break during windy conditions."

This is a brand new tree, what should I do?

Wait for the drought that’s right around the corner. That will dry up those roots.

It’s mostly sunny and 88 right now.

Don’t worry about it although you can plant them close to the soil line. I’ve never had a problem and I’ve been growing and managing thousands of trees, the majority apples on that rootstock for 25 years in NY. It is a popular rootstock down south and has a rep for toughness. It certainly performs well in a wide variety of soil types. It’s only problem here is for some varieties it takes a very long time to bare fruit.

My M111s are doing the same thing. Be aware of borers. That has been the biggest issue for me. I sprayed the trunks with Carbaryl last week.
