Here’s a picture of Ivan. I got this from Fedco on a bit of a whim. But it’s great. A lot like an early season Frostbite with a similar flavor of maple syrup and intense sweetness.
interesting. i have several grafts of frostbite and sweet 16 on my sargents crab that have apples this year. looking forward to trying them. planted out a Wickson crab, zestar and Wiliams pride from fedco last spring. they’re growing well. all had blooms last spring but i pinched them off.
You used Sargent’s as rootstock?
yes. it was a freebee from arbor day. they set about 30 fruit this spring. it has great crotch angles. trained to a open center. has sweet 16, frostbite, burgundy and mama duck from a member on here. the 1st 3 set fruit. mama ducks a new graft. its only 7ft.
I wanted to try Sargent as seedlings; but thought it might be to bushy to train right. Good to know so I can buy those seeds and Bittenfelder seeds.
Sargent being a small crab; I thought it would be great with low vigor apple scions.
makes a great naturally dwarfed tree. mines about 6 yrs. old. grafted over at 4.
I was going to do Micromalus for a super-dwarf for potted plants. Then I got the idea to try Bud 57-146 since it is super-dwarf and a bit disease resistant. Just a bit brittle wood.
Maybe Sargent is the better way.
can’t hurt to try. i like the structure of the tree.
