Jaboticaba (Brazilian Grape)

Im

sure this fruit is something most of you have never heard of. I was introduced to it about 4 years ago by a friend of mine. It has proved to be a very easy fruit tree to grow and is very adaptable to pot culture. The weird thing about this fruit is that it grows on the trunk and large branches of the tree and not on stems! Taste is very similar to a muscadine grape and is great for fresh eating, jams and jellies. If you have a greenhouse or Florida room, “ Jabos” are a great addition to your fruit collection!

I apologize for the big glob of shrink wrap in the picture. I’m attempting to do an air layer on this tree.

Love jabos, I have a red in the ground and a black in a pot, and around 10 seeds/lings in various stages. They have grown in popularity since the first time I had one at our community garden about a decade ago. Delicious fruit, I can’t wait for mine to start fruiting.

Yes. Seems like there are 6-8 varieties of Jabo’s being sold around Georgia/Florida. They are definitely gaining popularity.

OMG, we had a tree when we lived in Brazil and it’s amazing! Love, love, love them! It turns the ground under the tree black from falling jaboticaba when they’re super ripe

A few years ago the rarer one were selling for hundreds on ebay and whatnot. I should give spouting them another try lol, not much success in 2 attempts.

I planted a single seed about a month ago and it has already sprouted. You should definitely try again!

I’ve had a bunch sprout for me, and others I haven’t. I think the ones that rotted were all ones that pushed roots out while in vermiculite, and then dried out before I moved them to a pot.
All the ones that I started in soil or plastic bag have all sprouted (or are still too new to tell).

I was in Brazil a few days ago and saw a lot of parrots swarming in a tree and was wondering why. I had to disturb their soiree to snap a couple of pics. What a terrible time to have a cold and not be able to taste the fruit though!

WOW! That’s beautiful!

Wow, those big trees are stunning. Mine don’t love the winter in inland San Diego but hopefully will get a little happier now that it’s toasty.
