What’s the best way to stop Japanese Beatles from eating my fruit tree’s and grape vines? I have those bag a bugs and they are trapping a lot but im not sure if im also luring more Beatles my way by using them. Neem oil products are useless.
With Japanese beetles it seems like prevention is the best way. Last year we did bag a bug heavily and this year there are very few beetles. I’ve also heard milky spore works well at killing the larvae.
For getting rid of them this year someone else will have to chime in because I’m not sure.
I sprayed leaves with spectracide to also eliminate earwigs and grasshoppers on one section of orchard where they were congregating last night and on my morning walk there werent any where i sprayed prior…
I didnt see any beneficial insects so I sprayed a little. I feel justified lol
My numbers are way down also afterheavy collecting last year. I expect more after Tuesday’s rain.
The “bag a bug” traps work great, but don’t place them in your garden/orchard. I have three bags hanging on tree limbs about 200 feet away from my garden/orchard. Yesterday, the trapped bugs were about 1 1/2 inches deep in each trap; the traps have been hanging about a week. When full, I will pour the bugs into a 5 gallon bucket that is half full of soapy water. I also push the mass of bugs under the soapy water several times to make sure they drown.
Two or more times a day, I walk along the grapes and shake off any bugs I see. They may come back, but they might fly to a trap. Some times I put soapy water in a 2 gallon bucket and hold it under the bugs before I shake them off the leaves.
I feed them to my bluegills. Have chickens?
My chickens love the beetles. Even more than mealworms
