Jewell gooseberry and disease susceptibility

Hello

I’ve been considering getting a few Jewell gooseberry bareroot plants, but cant seem to find much info on whether theyre resistant to white pine blister rust and to mildew. Might anyone have more experience with this variety or more info? Thanks so much

I’ve only seen it listed on OGW, and it’s been out of stock for like two or three years now. They say it’s a Polish cultivar, so if anyone knows what the original name was more information might be available.

The reason they discontinued was the cultivar they had was not jewel. I know I got one. It has since died.
I can say it was not jewel.

Oh, interesting info, thanks. I purchased some cuttings, but figured i’d also buy a bareroot if they appeared online again, ill just wait on the cuttings then

if you grow it and arent sure if its WPBR resistant, spray it at leaf out and again before the flowers bloom with spectracide immunox. it will prevent infection. I’ve used it on a few of mine that aren’t resistant and haven’t had reinfection since. got that info. from an older publication. haven’t seen it published anywhere else but has worked for 5 years.

I bought a Jeanne from honeyberry USA about 6 years ago. It was damaged by a freak windstorm a couple years ago, but is still alive. It’s maybe about 3ft wide and a couple feet tall, but hasn’t really produced much mature fruit. It was a good sized plant with good roots when I received it. According to the vendor it has good resistance to WPBR and mildew.

We had much better luck with an Oregon Champion which has grown into a big bush. We’ve had a couple good harvests off it. We got it from Tractor Supply about the same time as the others.

We also have a Poorman but it’s not done much.

Here’s a link to hbusa’s site:

i have 2 Jeanne. they fruit so heavily the branches are all on the ground. going to put up a fence next spring and tie the branches to it. only way to keep it off the ground.

How do you rate Jeanne’s fruit? I put in two last year.

i like it off the bush but haven’t tried cooking with it yet. i haven’t tasted another gooseberry since i was a kid so nothing to compare it to.

in my experience the American/European crosses have the most disease resistance. not speaking to fruit quality, my most vigorous plants last year were captivator, black velvet and Glendale. Glendale has beautiful fall foliage as well.

Any chance anyone’s found a legit seller of jewel?

I planted 2 Jeanne last spring… they grew well last year. Hope to get some fruit this year.

I had tried jostaberry and red currants and they could not hack it in Tennessee. To hot and humid for them I think… had awefull foliage issues.

A fellow Tennessean told me about Jeanne last spring and that they have done well for him. Hopefully they work for me too.

Poorman has been my best in Maryland swampy weather, it’s South West unobstructed facing. I got from HBU last spring, and it went from about 8 inches to over 3ft in 1 season. Even kept a few leaves all winter somehow. Glendale is shaded by a dogwood but did great as well(no where near same level of growth tho). No mildew on either. Glendale is currently waking up (few bud breaks), but poorman still has buds closed last I looked.

I planted a number of others in the fall, so waiting to see how they do this year.

I pre ordered a jewel from one green world a few months ago but looks like they’re out of stock now. Maybe keep an eye on their website or subscribe to waitlist.

I asked Lucille at Whitman about Langley gage and she wouldn’t sell me any due to disease and bug issues with hers. That’s the only place I know of.

@DaveW-wi5b

Yeah I ordered from her about 3 weeks ago and tried to get it and she wouldn’t do that one, early sulphur or colossal (my colossal baked in the sun last year so wanted to try again). So I’m guessing need to find someone with them now.

I signed up for notifications for Jewel.

Hard to find another yellow GB aside from hinn. Yellow too.

Oregon champion is greenish-yellowish when ripe I believe. This will be my second year with it so I can only go off website descriptions. Got it from scenic hill last year.

I got one from tractor supply a few weeks ago :grinning:
