Jonathan Bark Damage

I have been trying to find pictures of damage like I found on my Jonathan saplings figure out what is causing it. Does anyone have any input? The damage is on the East side of the tree. Also, any suggestions as to what to do if it is still alive come spring? Would it be best to cut it off below the damage, which is about 3 feet up?

I’m guessing Cicada…or possibly a grasshopper…pierced the bark to lay eggs.
Won’t likely kill the tree, but it may make it break there at the damage area at some future time in a windstorm.

I planted a number of trees in 1991 and the 17-year locusts really did a number on them
. I did nothing and they all survived (and none broke in the wind either, amazingly).
