Jujube and Persimmon recommendations: South Central KS

LI, Lang, honeyjar jujube are the typical recommendations. My favorite persimmon is H118.

If you can grow Kasandra hybrid persimmon.. I would highly recommend it. It is so delicious and a real producer too.

On Jujube.. I have done the Orchard tour at Englands Orchard the last two years… and after getting thru all of the persimmons we go thru his orchaed full of Jujube trees. He has lots..

Black Sea, Chico and Hunan Egg… were some of my favorites.. they have a good mix of sweet and some tart too.. very good.

Hunan Egg had the best texture of any Jujube I have eaten.. nice and crisp and crunchy.

Many jujubes .. have a texture like Styrofoam.

Hunan was a delight to eat.

Honey Jar… awesome flavor for sure.. but they were quite small.

39th Parallel Nursery & Orchard in Lawrence, Kansas sells Grafted Jujube plants. They have an amazing jujube, persimmon, apples and pears orchard. I recently purchase Li, Lang and Honey Jar from them.

The Asian species D. Kaki is not sufficiently cold hardy there. There are two other avenues: (1) the American species, D. virginiana; and (2) hybrids of the Asian and American species. If you decide #1, stick to named varieties, which will be better than random wild trees. But IMO, the hybrids will produce better fruit.

There’s lots of discussion on this forum re these choices. I suggest you read. My own top picks would be hybrids such as Kasandra, Dar Sofiyivki.

I just looked at 39th’s website. Says their online store is closed until fall. And I didn’t find any persimmon on their website. I could maybe make a trip up there to pick up in person if that’s what it takes. I’d buy at a couple of each; jujube and persimmon. Do they sell persimmon on request or something like that?

I visited their orchard this Sunday weekend as they had a u-pick fruits day and potted trees sale. We drove from Lincoln,Nebraska. I was late last year to order the jujube plants from them. Since, In person allows you to pick your plants, we made the trip. They also ship the plants to you, but in fall season when the plants are dormant. The owner ( I think his name is Mike) seems to be a really nice person. You can email them too. They had H-118 grafted persimmon plants for sale if I recollect. I purchased jujube plants and Clarks Crab apple tree after reading about it on this forum.

Thanks for the reference to 39th guys. I sent him an email this morning. I was just in that area last weekend to move my kid into a small local college. Should have thought to visit his nursery (but didn’t really have time to be honest).
