My first year grafting jujubes, sporadic results so far. I used some very healthy tigertooth trees for understock as well as an unknown sucker variety thought to be LE Cooke rootstock. I’m getting the exact opposite results than I expected, very little to zero growth on those on the super vigorous tigertooth and somewhat decent results on the unknown. The tigertooth were fully leafed out and pushing growth when I did them and the others were nearly completely dormant… the picture attached is grafted to the tigertooth and has this yellowish orange something underneath the paraffilm. Is the scion dead? Or is this something jujubes do? The ones doing this also haven’t been suckering at all. Maybe I should have left a nurse branch?
Haven’t done it yet. I unwrapped one that was pushing growth and it turned brown and stopped. I’ll unwrap it and check it. Will update here with the findings. Thanks!
So completely unwrapped and the orange stuff appears to be maybe a fungus? See attached photo. It’s one of the prettiest same caliper whip and tongues I’ve done, and it looks like it calloused on the bottom pretty well but none on the top, although the wood underneath did NOT look dried up🤔 I wrapped it back up and we’ll see. What is strange is the others that took have been suckering and this one hasn’t at all… maybe I grafted to the rootstock too late after it had spent up it’s stores? Things get going early here compared to other places so maybe that’s my lesson learned…Uploading: FB89005E-8FEA-4C90-945A-CA61B47D15AC.jpeg…Uploading: A908409A-03C3-4295-BC2B-B23EF1FE4192.jpeg… Honey Jar grafted to mostly dormant rootstock 2 weeks later:
