Jujube ID and is it Dead?

So I got a friend that has a Jujube planted by a previous owner. He basically stumped the tree this year probably after watching a YouTube video. Will it grow back or should I get a graft on there?

I’ve heard the Japanese use to stump their Jujube trees down very low each season.

Also does anyone know the variety @BobVance (I didn’t want to clog your amazing post up) not super sweet and they’re fairly big and not bad but somewhat foamy texture and if left on to dry does taste like a dried date. The tree did break and it had many many lbs of fruit removed before this picture.

If it was cut back during the winter, I suspect it will send up shoots in the spring. Wouldn’t hurt to put a bark graft on it if the variety isn’t impressive.

I’m not sure why they would do that. I sometimes cut them for height (maybe 10’), but in this case it is too low, with only trunk left.

If they were a bit more pear shaped I would say Lang. But from the pics, I’m guessing Li. Maybe it didn’t get enough water and the texture suffered.

Excellent thank you Bob!

Here’s an update just for kicks. Looks like she came back. He did that because I mentioned hearing that about stumping them every year. I’m glad it did. He loves them but that one in particular is too dry and spongy to me. I tried talking him into grafting on a HJ, Sugarcane or Chico but no luck.

Will they fruit on this year‘s growth similar to a grape?

I believe they can from what I’ve read. Bob would know best I just got my first Jujube tree this season and the one I’m the photo above is a friends and he don’t know for sure.
