Jujube initial pruning

Just planted a whip, can i cut it back to knee high like most of my other trees?

From reading up on this one, it sounds like it grows a little different than most trees in that it only has one main bud that grows at a time or something like that and then the 1 cut stop 2 cuts grow or whatever that rule is.

So since it grows different, would i just let this do whatever it wants to do after the initial knee cut assuming i can even do that w/ jujube to keep the height down a bit instead of trying to train it to say open center?

Why cut it to knee high?
What’s your purpose?

all my trees r cut to knee high so it branches out low and forms an open center. doesn’t sound like jujube can be grown this way though.

But what’s the goal? Are you trying to keep it dwarfed?
If not, it’s not really going to grow like an apple tree that has been cut knee high. It’s hard to explain how jujubes grow compared to more common fruit trees, but keep in mind that different jujube cultivars can grow very differently. A few do tend to have a semi-weeping growth pattern and cutting them knee high might not work well. Others can have a very erect growth pattern so cutting them knee high would eventually result in numerous sprouts that would grow straight up.

just keep it smallish is the goal and an understanding of how it grows would be good too i guess. I cant find much on jujube in general let alone for back yard orchard culture.

All my older trees are getting their winter hair cut now and all the new ones i planted are dealt with besides this jujube. Its a 4ft whip and its driving me nuts since i cant cross the task off the list.

Would you cut it back a bit or just leave it and see what it does?

I would leave the jujube alone for a couple of years and see what it does. Some of the young grafts will produce fruit for a couple of years but no vertical growth at all.
