Jumping the cambium

This 5 year old grafted tree(one of my first bench grafts) was girdled by rabbits. I was expecting it to die but it has survived so far and also has a lot of fruit. What are the odds of it living for much longer?

It will keep growing but won’t wake up in the spring, in my experience. You could try a bridge graft to restore the connection. Use some twigs from the top.

That is a beautiful tree, and definitely worth trying to save!

Do you have porcupines in your area? Looks a bit high for bunnies.

Hi Gary.

I am from Spain from a region called Castilla-La Mancha in the center of the Iberian Peninsula.
Here in my region the rabbit is a declared pest for agriculture and the only method of fight is grow tubes.

I’m sorry to be the one to tell you but unfortunately due to the damage that tree has (the rabbits have totally eaten all the bark with the cambium), that tree will die soon.

Tomorrow I will show you some photographs of my orchard so that you can see how I have protected all my trees.

Rabbits are real shit.

Best regards
José

I don’t really see how either of these posts add to the conversation.
