Just for you, paw-paw lovers

You guys do realize @Osteen isn’t quite a spring chicken right? Age is just a number anyway and you all seem to be defying the norm with the lifestyles you lead. Maybe those pawpaws keep you young and spry

I did revise my comment remembering how long Osteen said he’d been eating the fruit. Blueberry’s comment threw me off. My brain spews ideas as well as it ever did, but my attention can easily be thrown by distractions- I had better focus when I was younger, but I wouldn’t trade back for that brain even if I could. I may change that opinion later though- full out dementia usually sucks, although in my father’s case, it didn’t seem to bring down his spirits- just some of us around him.

Spewing ideas could be taken many ways. I choose to keep my mouth shut and let my fingers do the talking.

That comes from village culture and the high priority put on saving face, I come from hippy culture and wise hippy once said, “we are all Bozos on this buss”. Human dignity is an oxymoron somewhere near the silliness of the term military intelligence. I prefer beginning with the premise that we are all fools, but kings or queens of our own personal hierarchies. Kings don’t rule queens either.

Thanks again Persimmon. I have made revisions; (1.) Chappell-. Parentage unknown, selected from mixed open pollinated seed from regional variety trial trees at H.R.B. research and development farm. Spin of the Ole’ Pawpaw Roulette wheel at KYSU. ( 2.) ‘Benson’, origin: ‘Levfiv’, (Susquehanna), open pollinated, growing at H.R.B. research and development farm.

All this over a paw-paw.

Think of it like this. We all have an interest in growing plants, many of which are natives in our area. Talk more about plants, less about personal things.

This is nothing compared to the sort of things I read on Facebook’s pawpaw pages. If you even mention the words Transplant or Bareroot and they will pile on you. Dont even think about sprouting a pawpaw seed in a shallow container. They will probably show up at your house ready to fight.

All jokes aside though I think less hair pulling and more pawpaw talk would be appreciated by everyone.

Yeah, OK, I admit I drifted into lounge type regressions, but I certainly intended it to be light hearted banter initially. One of the virtues of personal messaging is you can go there when your comment is not on topic and more personal. But when someone complains about such a comment back on the topic (out in public) you are kind of put in a box. I may prescribe to the idea that we are all Bozos on this bus, but it isn’t always an easy mantra to follow when you are being signaled out as the Bozo. .

Then let’s run with that controversy. I love transplanting paw-paws bare root because it is a great way to get rootstocks for grafting select varieties onto and have found from personal experience that paw-paws transplant bare root much more easily than many believe- at least in my climate. I also have difficulty getting seeds to sprout for me.

I have successfully transplanted suckers from established trees many times, it works especially well if you put them in pots in the greenhouse for initial root development, where humidity is steady and high- but it certainly isn’t necessary to achieve success. Pile on that paw-paw lovers!

I don’t think that’s a controversy over here, thankfully! We need less controversy and more “this is what worked for me” in this fruit growing sphere. :slightly_smiling_face:

There seems to be a lot of misconceptions about pawpaws. Transplanting is a big one. Ive had success moving young trees 3 yrs and less but i will say my best growing pawpaw is a Atwood that i grafted onto a seedling i directly sowed where i wanted the tree. Very very vigorous. I have many other trees i sprouted in 4x14 containers and transplanted while under 3ft tall and they dont even compare with the vigor of this Atwood.

Ahhh… yes… like running the gauntlet of the Siouxx, these Facebook Pawpaw forums you speak of certainly are. I have experienced them all:-… Pawpaw Fanatics, Pawpaw Fanclub, Pawpaw Zealots, Pawpaw Chronicles, Pawpaw Disciples, Pawpaw Nation, Pawpaw Planet, to name a few. And Yes, I prefer this forum over them all . Of course, the Bucks will always have a propensity to wanna lock horns, but since this forum is well known for it’s high degree of Civility, I hereby pledge to do my utmost best to not tarnish this forums well earned reputation. Thanks for your post Preston.

Perhaps it is this vigor of the directly sown seedling that you grafted onto?

Yeah it could be that the seedling is exceptionally vigorous. That must be at least part of the reason it grows so well. Not dealing with any transplant shock has been my thought. Likely both have something to do with it but there is a HUGE difference in growth.
All of my grafted trees have been very similar in growth rate with Mango being noticeably more vigorous than others like so many have described. I have another (transplanted from pot) Atwood in the ground and its right in line with the other trees growth rate. For whatever reason this tree has been so much more vigorous and puts even Mango to shame. This one just really wants to be a shade tree. I have chopped it back down to 8ft tall 3 times but now I’m going to let it grow and rain down the pawpaws.
