Anyone know if the Kikisui Asian pear available from Raintree nursery (https://raintreenursery.com/sale/kikisui-a-pear-ohxf87-b530) is the same as the popular Kikusui? i asked them directly but they never answered me. i ordered it anyways from them with the hopes that it’s the same thing.
I see ‘Hosui’ as being a cross between Kikusui x Yakumo some places online, other places I see it as a cross between Kikisui x Yakumo
I am not 100% sure if they are the same variety, yet if I were to guess, then I’d guess yes, and maybe one spelling is a translation error.
‘Kikusui’ is also called ‘21st Century’, not to be confused with the well known asian pear called ‘20th Century’.
For what it’s worth, the pollinizers that Raintree recommends are consistent with Kikusui, i.e., their bloom periods overlap it’s.
They both have the same decryption, even the mentioning of a tart sweet taste, the fruit looks exactly alike. See this photo and compare with the link I shared above
thanks for the link to bower and branch nursery and the additional information. i like that they have a historical description of the fruit in addition to the characteristic description. the description on raintree does make it sound like kikusui and that’s why i bought it. i already have nijiseiki and i really like it, and that’s one of the reasons i wanted to try kikusui. i was hoping that someone on here might’ve purchased one from raintree some years ago and could comment on this topic based on the fruits they got from it, especially if they’ve tasted kikusui previously.
I hope I can get a piece of scionwood even though the tree is cheap. I had bad luck with small trees. FB killed my 4-1 pear and apple trees.
