Here is a statement I read about Kui lu and Ruby Star: "Kui Lu (18 g) est très rustique (-38 C), hâtif et il produit de gros fruits, mais il pourrait être difficile de se le procurer. Rendement : 13 kg/pl. (plants de 8 ans) Le cultivar Rubystar (19 g) provient probablement du même sélectionneur. "
Here is the translation: “Kui Lu (18 g) is very hardy (-38 C), early and produces large fruits, but it may be difficult to obtain. Yield: 13 kg / pl. (8-year-old plants) The Rubystar variety (19 g) is probably from the same breeder.”
Worst winter here in years. -17 twice during a two week cold spell. other days, -8, -10, -12, & -2 were some of the days among other similar days during that cold stretch.
Ken’s Red and Ken’s Red pollinizer and (2) ‘Isaii’ kiwis have zero dieback and were not protected. The Ken’s Red and pollinizer were planted mid-summer from 2" x 2" pots. So very happy with the results.
Wow. Looks like a canker type disease. I guess even the hardy kiwis may not be that trouble free.
Those are the ones I have. (Ken’s Red & Meador Male). I thought I’d try grafting the male to the female and vice versa in case I lose one. I’m also propagating them. I got mine last summer too and they turned into beasts. This winter I built a trellis for them from 3/4" EMT. Hopefully it will help me manage their vigor.
Thank you for sharing that info with us Anne. I guess I won’t have a trip to China after all But seriously, we are blessed right now if it is indeed affecting the plants in other parts of the world, but not here. It seems seeds are OK… I wonder if a seedling of these cultivars would be possible.
Yes, it would be different, but It may be a result in a good variety. Never know. You have a friend who has a seedling kiwi? You mean Deliciosa in a container… or…arguta? Tell me more !
I’ve been trying to grow seeds from the yellow kiwi for the past couple years. They germinate pretty easily (I let the fruit ferment before collecting the seeds)
I had one that was in its third year that I lost. I currently have 3-4 going into their 2nd years this spring. My plant is to plant them into the ground once I think they are ready.
wish they would flower sooner so I could sex them. Interestingly, the stems are fuzzy on young growth…
