does anyone know why my kumquat trees are shedding so many green leaves? I water it every other day. I bought it from costco about a month ago.
maybe too much water. i only water mine every 4 days outdoors and thats only if we dont get any rain in that time.
It could be root rot due to over watering. And to soil that retains too much water. Regular potting soil will do that. You must use a soil like 5:1:1, pine bark, perlite, peat moss. Pull it out of its pot and look for root rot: brown roots that break easily and/or bad odor.
A drastic change in environmental conditions may also cause leaf drop. It should be in full sun.
I agree with the too much water theory. Overwatering symptoms look almost exactly like underwatering until you look at the roots. I have two potted citrus that I water every couple of days, but they are large for their pots and have very well drained mixes that don’t retain a lot of excess moisture. Even then, I only water them that frequently when they’re outside for the summer and they’re using more water. If you’re not sure when to water, just stick your finger in the soil. When it’s dry an inch or so down, that’s when to water. Also, picking up the pot and noticing its heft helps a lot. You don’t want to water until it’s noticeably lighter.
