theres been a resurgence in this type of gardening. cardboard really turbocharges the soil. ive done it in a few raised beds that easily out produced my other regularly amended beds. i even plant trees directly on 2 layer heavy cardboard, right on grass, then the soil and heavy mulch. they all took off better than anything ive planted in ground. i think the air to the roots with the rotting cardboard and sod does the trick. ive never had to feed the trees grown like this either. i also think the cardboard/sod holds moisture to help the tree get a good start. ive read in some really old orchard planting guides to save the sod and throw it upsided down in the bottom of your planting hole then the tree and back fill with dirt so i think we are on to something here. would be even better for you guys w/ sandy soil in hot climates. kind of like hugelkulture but with grass sod. if youre worried about N tie up, throw down some 10-10-10 before the sod.
