The linked article was posted to a FB chestnut group page some time back. I’ve always known that there was a lot of ‘warm fuzzy’ dubious mythology attributed to the American Chestnut… claims that ‘one in every four trees in the eastern deciduous forest was an American Chestnut’, etc.; this article gives a more accurate picture of C.dentata’s actual prevalence… and touches on the fact that, in some areas of the country, timber harvest actually allowed C.dentata to increase in prevalence and dominance that was not possible before European colonization. I found it an interesting read…
